Sholarship Information

Scholarship Awards
Two awards of up to $500.00 are made annually (eligible for $500 per year for up to four years). The scholarship program is funded through private donations and is subject to the availability of funding.

Eligibility Requirements

·         Must have been a resident of the Port Huron Housing Commission public housing program for the past 12 months.

·         Applicant must be sponsored by a PHHC employee who will confirm that the applicant’s household is in good standing with the PHHC in accordance with our Admissions and Continued Occupancy Policies. 

·         Open to graduating high school seniors, current college, and adult residents seeking to begin or return to college. Graduating high school seniors will receive priority status.

·         Applicants who are graduating high school seniors and those currently attending college must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5

·         Applicants seeking to return to college must provide an official high school or college transcript which demonstrates that the applicant is a high school graduate and had a cumulative high school or college GPA of at least 2.5

·         Must attend an accredited college or university as a full-time student (12 hours per semester)

·         Scholarship winners are eligible to renew the scholarship annually for up to 4 years. Continuing requirements of the scholarship are:

o   Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5.

o   Must maintain full-time enrollment. 

Application Requirements: All Applicants Must Submit the Following Application Materials:

·         Completed Housing Matters Inc. Resident Scholarship Application Form.

·         Letter of recommendation from a PHHC employee (your Housing Manager, Section 8 Coordinator, Resident Services Specialist or other PHHC staff member) that shows your household is in good standing with the Housing Commission.

·         Short essay (approximately 300 – 500 words) on the topic “My career goals and how the educational program I am pursuing will help me reach these goals.”

Additional Eligibility Requirements by applicant status:

·         Graduating High School Seniors: 

o   Official high school transcript that shows high school completion and minimum GPA of 2.5.   

o   Letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator at the applicant’s high school.

o   Letter of acceptance from an accredited community college, college, or university

·         Current College School Student: o Letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor at applicant’s college/school.

o   Official college/school transcript that shows:

§  A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.

§  Maintained full-time enrollment during the term preceding application.

§  Enrolled full-time for the upcoming fall term.

·         Adult Seeking to Begin or Return to College:

o   Official high school or college transcript which demonstrates that the applicant is a high school graduate and had a cumulative high school or college GPA of at least 2.5

o   Letter of acceptance from an accredited community college, college, or university

o   Proof of full-time enrollment for the upcoming fall term.

All Scholarship application materials must be received by the PHHC by the application deadline.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 5 P.M. MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2018

Application Evaluation Port Huron Housing Commission staff will conduct an initial screening of applications and make recommendations based on the program requirements outlined above. The Housing Commission governing board will review applications from qualified applicants and confirm all Scholarship winners.
